My wife likes being prepared well in advance for things. Preparing for her delivery date was no exception. She needed to figure out exactly what to pack for the hospital when having a baby. For seven months she prepared for the arrival of our little girl by buying out the clearance items at Babies R Us, Kohls, and other such stores. We loaded up on supplies and on baby-friendly furniture. We were well prepared! By her 7th month she was already planning out her delivery-day, and had packed and unpacked and repacked our bags several times over.

First off we needed the bare necessities: soap, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste, eyeglasses, skin lotion, alkaseltzer, pepto bismol, pen and paper, gentle-on-the-stomach snacks like Teddy Grahams, graham crackers, Ritz Crackers, Snickers, chewing gum, bottled water, tissues, phone numbers, etc. We also made sure we had all our identification, insurance cards, paperwork, delivery requirements and needs for the doctors to review, cell phones and chargers, extra cash and credit cards on hand and easily collected at the drop of a hat. She wanted to be sure we were prepared for surprises, long waits, note-taking, red-tape or whatever else might get thrown at us. A lot of the supplies she bought new, leaving our everyday items alone and free to use.

We were planning on an extended stay, so we figured we’d try to keep ourselves as comfortable as possible. She packed up two or three spare sets of clothes for each of us, comfy clothing we could sit around in, or sleep in when we had to. A spare blanket to bundle-up in, and soft pillows, went in yet another bag. For entertainment, we brought along a couple books to read, and our laptop. The laptop was great, considering the hospital had wifi, and it let us keep in touch with people through emails and Facebook.

Of course, we couldn’t forget about the baby supplies right? Well, I might have, but not my wife, haha. It seems so simple, but don’t you ever forget that only two of you walk into the hospital, but your family grows by one before you leave! So we needed a diaper bag stuffed with some warm clothing for infants and a couple cute pink swaddling blankets, baby hats and baby mittens and socks, pacifiers. We needed diapers for infants, and specialty baby bottles and baby formula just in case breast-feeding didn’t go well. And we needed a child’s car seat and baby carrier. Oh, dear lord, don’t forget a car seat and carrier! We chose one that attached to a folding stroller, which turned out to be an awesome choice. Remember that the hospital won’t even let you leave until they know that you have a car seat to take your newborn baby home in.

Sheesh, where would I be without my wife’s awesome planning? Up the creek without a paddle, that’s where! All these things seem so simple to remember to take with you, but when the time is upon you, your brain will be a scattered, nervous wreck. Remembering what to pack for the hospital when having a baby is the last thing you want to do as you’re scrambling and struggling to get out the door, down the stairs and into your car safely and quickly. Just get it all packed up like we did, waaaaaaay in advance of your due date. Leave those bags either in the trunk of your car, or right near the door ready to go! Preparing ahead of time for every contingency will really save you a lot of trouble.
