So much time waiting in expectation, so much effort spent building and testing in order to send spacecraft out into space to study the planets close to us. And so many questions! For us laypeople, it is often the simplest questions that fascinate us: Exactly what color is Mars the planet? What color is Venus the planet? What color is Mercury the planet??
Today, lets give you some information about Mercury the planet, and its coloring. To the human eye, Mercury is unfortunately only a drab, pock-marked gray. Since our eyes are only sensitive to the wavelength range of 400 to 700 nanometers, things can’t really improve beyond this. Or can they? Why have many of the pictures you’ve seen in the news and on the internet been splashed with rainbow colors?
NASA has always had the knack of turning otherwise invisible information into breathtaking high-def panoramas. The brilliant images you find of Mercury today are not what you’d expect for a drab gray planet. Pictures gathered by the spacecraft Messenger are high-resolution color images taken with a Wide Angle Camera (or WAC). This multi-lensed camera filtered light through the infrared, far red, and violet spectrum ranging from 430, to 700, through to 1000 nanometers in order to create the dazzling pictures showed off to the world.
By compiling the images from all three wavelengths together, and placing them into the red, green, blue channels for display, scientist were able to render false-color images of Mercury that brightly accentuated and exaggerate changes in color. This allows for analysis and discrimination of common mineral deposits on the surface of the planet. Observations have given hints that the composition seems consistent with low-iron feldspar minerals, and scientists are wagering that the Mercury has a dense iron core much greater than Earth, Mars, or Venus.
So what is the color of the planet Mercury? Sorry folks, nothing more spectacular than gray. Not nearly as fun as discovering what color is the planet Mars, or what color is the planet Venus, right?
