Also known as the Volkswagen T25 and as the Volkswagen Type 2 of the production years 1979 to 1992, the Volkswagen T3 is the third in line of the Volkswagen Transporter series. It had different names in different regions which include Transporter or Caravelle in Europe and the Vanagon in the North and South America. It was also marketed in South Africa as the Microbus.
While it may have been called different names, the Volkswagen T3 stayed true to its roots as the people’s car as it provided a low cost operation automobile for the people. The Volkswagen T3 is larger and heavier than previous models of the Volkswagen Transporter line. The Volkswagen T3 featured larger front disk brakes and rear drums and also boasted of an internal combustion engine and a transaxle which is mounted in the back at a very low level. The Volkswagen T3 also had upgrades from its predecessor, the Volkswagen T2, such as power steering, power door locks, air conditioning, electrically controlled and heated mirrors, lighted vanity mirrors, and a light above the glove box. Initial production of the car featured an air-cooled engine which eventually was replaced by a water-cooled one. The weight of the axle was almost perfectly equal upon both the front and back ends of the car.
Four general petrol engine variants of the Volkswagen T3 was manufactured from 1979 to 1991 with many sub-models, all of which were overhead valve push-rod horizontally opposed four-cylinder engines. There were also diesel engine variants of the Volkswagen T3 and all of which were of inline configuration that gave these variants greater fuel economy over their gasoline engine counterparts.
