Toltec’s Tiffany lighting is an awesome style of pool table lights can be a great addition to any pool room. I took a fancy to their Popular Pearl line of lighting, so this review is focused on those.

The people of Toltec have this to say for themselves:

“Founded in the 1970′s, Toltec is a family-owned and run company dedicated to creating quality and competitively priced lighting fixtures for your home. While quality and value continue to be the hallmarks that Toltec is famous for, we take pride in having taken the lead in the field of design. we are continually introducing new concepts and ideas while maintaining a close eye on tradition.  At Toltec, we bridge all possible worlds.”

Let me tell you, these Toltecs are some very finely crafted billiard lights. The stained glass is elegant and not too gaudy, giving just enough accent to your table and your pool room to really give you that ‘warm-fuzzy’ feeling.

My personal favorites are the #129 Popular Pearl Tiffany Light with Pearl and Green with Brass Channels and the #527E Popular Pearl Tiffany Light with Clear Ripple and ClearGlass with Brass Channels. The designs feature some exquisite glass finishes, and can bring some major charm and beauty to your pool table rooms.

The Pearl and Green runs about $475 with just 3 lights, but if you’re like me, and want to light up a 9’ pool table instead of those tiny little 7’ or 8’ tables, I’m guessing you’ll need a longer fixture with an extra light bulb, bumping the cost up to $585. I’m not positive yet if the extra-bulb-upgrade actually gives you a longer pool table light, but I’ve sent their customer service a query, and I’ll update this post as soon as they’ve responded.  Now, I like this particular choice of pearl-and-green because the two-toned color scheme matches and compliments my favorite pool-felt color: deep green (so their other color choices, of course, would thus be ideal for tables covered in alternate, yet matching, colors).

The ClearGlass pool table lighting comes with only one choice: the 10 candelabra lights, and two lights pointing down. Asking price is $630, which is a bit hefty, but probably worth the budget-stretch considering how eye-catching it is. Brass and clear-glass candelabra lighting direct within your game rooms really adds an old-world touch. Imagine matching this with a warm dark-wood theme, one reminiscent of gas-lights and cobblestone streets. Add some 8 ball or 9 ball themed black-&-white framed posters to enhance the atmosphere, or even some old-school mafia B&W’s full of tommy-guns and antique cars, and you’ve got yourself one jiving game room! My only worry with this light is that the candelabra lights might be too bright and distracting. I Kind of wish they had included an option for smoked-glass tinting to take away a bit of the glare.

Most of these Toltec Tiffany lighting are available in 2, 3 or 4 light configurations, even single-bulb pendants with attaching chains or light-stands.  All Billiard lights come with enough chain, wiring and ceiling canopy for a nine-foot high ceiling. Extra chain and wire are available upon request at the time you place an order. All in all, I give Toltec a solid 4.25 stars on class and quality.

When you are selecting a pool table lights the main thing you need to keep in mind is the overall lighting scheme of your pool room. It’s really best to have most of your light focused on the pool table, and much less lighting surrounding its immediate vicinity, at least while the table is in use. Bright lighting everywhere else in the room will wash out the shadowing around the object balls and pockets that normally help you analyze your aim and line of sight. This will distract you when you are shooting, and make it very difficult to focus. This is one of the reasons most pool halls are very dark except for their pool table lights.

I speak from experience when I point this out because two of my favorite pool halls had enormous bay windows along one wall of their establishments. During the daytime it was nearly impossible to play on the sunlight-blasted tables. I got blinded by reflections off of any cars outside, and the sunlight was often stronger than the table lights making it so tough to line up shots that I finally gave up playing at those halls during daylight hours. So yeah, make sure the lighting is brightest over your table.

Now, when you have a pool table and pool room designed for entertaining, it is imperative to have a light fixture that enhances the visual appeal of not only you pool table, but the whole room as well. You’re going to be spending a lot of time in this new dream room of yours, so you’d better not cheap-out with a poor design! Choosing stained glass pool table lights can help set the mood for an entire room, or a dark non-descript fixture might work better to let other features of the room design stand out pleasantly. Again, I speak with the bias of one who loves the game of pool and its ambiance. I’m strongly suggesting that you give careful attention to the complete design of your pool room. You really want to do justice to your pool table and the money you’ve spent on it.

There are many themes you can explore. The ambiance of a traditional pool hall, reminiscent of smoky taverns, booze and gambling, would make many a die-hard pool and billiard fan shriek in delight. Perhaps you’d like to class it up with some lighter colors, silver metal work, and sharp, simple lines. You might even choose a very clean but rugged design geared towards entertaining your children and their friends. Choose carefully, because you’ll be stuck with your choices for a long time to come.

No matter what theme you choose to follow, remember that there is an ideal height for hanging your pool table lights fixture. It will be slightly different for each one, but on average you’re expecting about forty inches from table-top to the bottom of the light fixture. Your main concern should be that the light bulbs don’t glare into your eyes. But you’ve also got to be sure that the fixture does not clunk you in the head every time you lean in to take a shot.

I mention this because in some basement pool rooms the ceiling is so low that creative options must be explored to get the lighting level correct. I know one person who forwent the fixture entirely, and instead installed some classy recessed lighting directly into his low basement ceiling in order to get things looking properly, and it turned out pretty good, actually. I’ve also had friends whose light fixture was much too large, and their ceiling much too low, and I spent many evenings earning bruises on my head while ducking awkwardly to get to my shots. Without the proper height, you will always be distracted by the ungainliness of your pool table light.
