A phlebotomist’s main duty is drawing blood from patients ready for the laboratory. This is usually achieved by venipuncture which is something you will learn during your phlebotomy training. It is vital patients and samples are handled exactly according to procedure and guidelines. This is to ensure the safety of the phlebotomist, the patient and also to prevent contamination of samples. It is also a phlebotomists job to clearly and accurately label and document samples.
In order to start working in the field of phlebotomy, a period of training must be endured. You will be taught how to safely handle and collection samples. These courses are available in most technical colleges and schools. You will also be learning health regulations, occupational safety, physiology and more. Each ‘block’ of the course will further prepare you for the job ahead. You will also have the opportunity to study other subjects alongside these which give you the chance of advancing your career even further, should you so wish to.
After you have finished studying you will have the option of becoming certified, this is done by taking a fully recognised exam through one of the four big agencies, these are the American Association of Medical Personnel, American Medical Technologists or the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. It should be noted that although phlebotomy certification is not a job requirement (except in a couple of states) it will greatly improve your chances of successfully landing a job in this competitive field and some hospital and clinics will even require it before letting you practice, despite the law.
It is important that a phlebotomist is capable with dealing with a vast array of patients with different individual needs. Many patients are afraid if the simple procedure of blood collection and it is your job to soothe and comfort them as well as answer any questions that patients may present to you about it.
