There are a lot of equestrians out there that are interested in riding their horse without a saddle. This is known as bareback horse riding. The problem is that this is actually a dangerous way to ride a horse, because there is absolutely nothing to hold onto except for the horse itself. There is a great risk of the rider falling off the horse when riding bareback. However, some equestrians risk riding bareback, because they feel that there is nothing like the feel of having your legs around the horse’s back and mane. Luckily, there is a treeless saddle that is available to give you and the horse at least a little support when riding.
If you are not aware of what a treeless saddle is, it is basically just a saddle without the frame or the tree. The tree is typically the structural frame of the saddle. It is very hard and offers structure to the saddle. Without the tree, the saddle is very flimsy or flexible so that it can wrap tightly around the horse.

It’s generally recommended that you use a soft pad or blanket underneath these saddles. This offers the horse some skin protection so that the saddle doesn’t rub the horse’s skin raw. The pads and blankets that you put under the saddle will offer some extra comfort to the rider.
When using a treeless saddle, you also have to be concerned with how the weight is distributed on the horses back. This is a concern because you no longer have a frame that is going to spread the weight over the whole back of the horse. It’s really important that if you are a heavy rider that you avoid riding with a treeless saddle or bareback for that matter. You could severely hurt your horse’s back if you are a heavier rider and riding without the proper saddle support.
