Whether you are creating custom jewelry for yourself or as a business, there is only one thing hard about creating custom cubic zirconia jewelry. You have to take the first step which is to start. Of course having a bit of style and creativity doesn’t hurt either.
You can easily learn the skills necessary to make good looking jewelry. A steady hand working with small pieces and your work will look good – very good.
What do you need?
- You need at least two pairs of small tipped needle nosed pliers which can be purchased at most hardware stores – or craft stores for pliers that are especially made for working with fine, small pieces.
- A small tipped torch that will enable you to direct a tiny flame into small areas to solder two pieces of metal.
- A type of vise that is sometimes called a “third hand”. This vise is basically made of strong clips rather than vise jaws. These clips will hold the small parts together while you hold the solder in one hand and the torch in your other hand. This type of parts holder is indispensable. It often comes with an attached magnifying glass so you can see what you are doing. You can usually find them at crafts stores but if you can’t find them, check out fishing tackle shops – these type of grips are also used when tying flies.
- You will need some general ‘shop’ supplies such as fine wire – stainless or perhaps sterling silver. This wire would be used in making earrings for example. For other jewelry, you can purchase fine silver solder to make an almost seamless join between two pieces of fine silver.
When creating your jewelry, remember what your final look will be. When making rings for example, make sure that the solder around the ‘top’ is fine enough that when you finish your examples of moissanite rings, the solder does not detract from the look!
